Huh? Every imaginable source I have ever seen refers to James Joyce's The Dead as a musical. The Tonys and the Drama Desk group put it in the category of musical. Its score contains 15 musical numbers. At least 2 major record labels were interested in producing a cast recording of the show's score (per Ken Mandlebaum's on-line column, Fynsworth Alley was one of them) but negotiations broke down (presumably) over financing. Most of the numbers in the show are sung diegetically, which is unusual for a book musical with an original score. In 2004 Pittsburgh Irish & Classical Theatre recorded the show's score with the cast from a local production. The recording was not available commercially, but could be obtained by making a donation to the organization.

Regarding One Man, Two Guv'nors, the show was categorized as a play (apparently) because that was what the producers wanted. The show's musical numbers were staged separately, apart from the book scenes (although i t was obvious that the songs were commenting on the story and the actions of the characters). When I saw a local production at Court Theatre in Chicago years later, the musical numbers were completely integrated into the show, and it definitely played liked a full-fledged musical comedy.

La Plume de Ma Tante was a Broadway musical revue, consisting of sketches in English and French, which included original music by Gerard Calvi and lyrics by Ross Parker and Francis Blanche, plus pantomime. It ran for over two years and was the biggest hit of its season. I assume it did not receive a Broadway cast album because the humor and brilliance of the piece could not be appreciated by listening to a recording.

Frankly, trying to distinguish between a piece being a musical or a play with music strikes me as a foolhardy endeavor because in reality there is no discernable difference between the two. Just IMO, of course.
