I saw "Big Gay Jamboree" this weekend and here are some thoughts. I've avoided direct spoilers but if you want to go into this original musical (!) fresh, I guess don't read this. Bottom line: I loved "Titanique" (probably because I went in with low expectations) but this show from the same creators wasn't for me (probably because I went in with higher expectations). The best way to describe it is that this 100 minutes-no-intermission show has second act trouble. There's a finale-feeling song around 75 minutes and then the show slowly meanders through a long (I guess intended to be inspirational?) sequence about one pop culture icon until finding its way to the plot's conclusion a half hour later. I thought the ultimate premise was terrific and could have made a fascinating musical but it feels like the creative team ran out of the steam to explore it fully. If this show somehow catches fire the way "Oh Mary" did, maybe they can fix it in a transfer. If I understood more of the throwaway pop culture laugh lines I might have enjoyed it more, but for me this show was more 1920s "Drowsy Chaperone" than 2000s "Drowsy Chaperone." That said, if you like watching Bravo, I bet you'll love this show. Or if you don't, bring along a friend who does and they can be your Man in Chair. I'd still go back to Titanique in a heartbeat though. |
