Grace Moore, famous opera star, who started in Broadway shows singing songs by Jerome Kern and Irving Berlin, died in a plane crash at 48. Ron Richardson, Tony winner for "Big River" died at 43. Jerry Hadley, operatic tenor, who played Ravenal on John McGlinn's "Show Boat" recording and other crossover recordings, died at 55. I met him a few times at my late voice teacher's place - very nice, funny guy Maria Callas -- ok, she didn't apparently sing anything publicly but opera, but she sometimes did go to Broadway shows, with stories of her attending "Candide" and "My Fair Lady" - but her achievements as a singing actress benefited all of musical theater and inspired the play "Master Class" and an upcoming Angelina Jolie film - died at 53 |
