All three versions of Phyllis's Turn are clever and witty and intelligent which defines who she is. Great playwriting in song. I think though, Lucy and Jessie fits the moment best as we see the pull of two sides of her sense of self. Uptown/Downtown uses a metaphor that by 1970 (much more so now)was losing it specificity. Gentrification was taking over more and more of Manhattan. As well, I'm not sure that is a precise enough hook for the two sides of her personality. Ah!,But Underneath seems to muddle the bifurcation ..."there's nothing underneath at all." Great way to end a striptease, but not the Phyllis we've seen up until then. We don't see her as fake. We see her as smart and able to fit in but feeling forced by her husband's self and career to play just one side of herself.
