This rumor was new to me, and I just read about it on BroadwayWorld's message board. Apparently, there was an effort to move Simard (''Death Bevomes Her'') and Helen J. Shen (''Maybe Happy Ending'') into Featured, so they would avoid the crowded, competitive field of Leading Actress.

That's why I was surprised by today's ruling about Shen in Leading Actress. I just assumed she was, having seen her name alongside Criss' above the title in various places, like on their neon marquee. But in the title page of their opening-night Playbill, only Criss is listed above the title.

I haven't had the chance to see ''Maybe Happy Ending'' yet, but Shen sounds like she surely belongs in Leading Actress.

Not that the Tonys haven't made some questionable calls in the past. In 2012, they ruled Kara Lindsay (''Newsies'') as eligible in Leading Actress. Yes, she played Katherine, Jack Kelly's love interest, but her limited stage time (to me) seemed more like a Featured Actress. She might've gotten a Featured Actress nomination, but Lindsay had no shot at a Leading nomination against women who had much larger co-leading roles, like Audra McDonald in ''Porgy & Bess,'' Jan Maxwell in ''Follies,'' Cristin Milioti in ''Once,'' Kelli O'Hara in ''Nice Work If You Can Get It'' and Laura Osnes in ''Bonnie & Clyde,'' who WERE nominated.

Speaking of ''Newsies,'' even more mindboggling, the Tonys ruled Ben Fankhauser as Davey, Jack's best friend, eligible in Leading Actor. Jeremy Jordan (as Jack) was clearly the show's leading man. Davey doesn't even have his own song. Fankhauser deserved to be up (& nominated) for Featured Actor instead.
