| This has happened twice recently with Australian plays which have transferred to London and then to New York. "Prima Facie" premiered in 2019 in Australia in a production directed by Lee Lewis and performed by Sheridan Harbridge (Kate Mulvaney was originally cast but had to withdraw as she was offered the Amazon series "Hunters" which would be filming at the same time). It was a hit and was picked up to play the west end in 2022 in a new production performed by Jodie Comer and directed by Justin Martin. This was filmed for NT Live and a feature film is planned starring Cynthia Errivo, to be directed by Susanna White. I do recall someone on this board complaining that Comer wasn't picked up for the film as she owned the role (despite, as mentioned, the role not originating with her) An adaptation of Oscar Wilde's Picture of Dorian Gray premiered in Australia in November 2020, adapted and directed by Kip Williams and performed by Eryn Jean Norvill - after a few revivals, it was picked up and performed in London last year, and will be performed in New York this year - in both cases, the transferred production stars Sarah Snook. I suppose it's a case of Australia being "out of town" enough for the originator to not really matter for UK/US consumption, but it is a similar situation. |
