| The renovated Palace is glorious. How odd to initiate this fabled theater with a three-week residency that's mostly an album-release party by a (not untalented) Broadway middleweight pretending to be a superstar. He plugs his album shamelessly -- at least half a dozen times. Cringey. He received a polite reception from a crowd that seemed to be dominated by TKTS buyers. The only real star power was provided by surprise guest Kristin Chenoweth, who brought down the house, reminding everyone how an actual star can fill a theater with joy. Ben said early on that he was going to give us "his all," and I'm sure he did. This show would have been a knock-out at Birdland or 54 Below, but at the Palace it seemed sadly ordinary. | |
