The album benefits, obviously, from controlled studio work, post production, etc. And of course it's hard to beat the performances even if I also enjoyed everyone in the Encores cast. But there are musical differences. The recording makes a number of cuts - some of them for underscoring that wasn't crucial to the listening experience. "Wake Up" is missing altogether, along with the Entr'acte. (One not knowing the show probably gets the impression that Act II starts with that building musical intro to "Dressed In Your Pyjamas," which it doesn't.) The vocals for "Autumn" are filled out (the song isn't heard completely through in the stage show). Part of the dance break to "The Latest Rag" is cut. And so on. So I do think the concert has the edge in terms of really hearing the full show - or almost the full show.

But the original cast recording is awesome on its own terms.
