Well-said, Singapore/Fling. Some might think that all Logan did was thrown the original screenplay onto the stage. But what works in Baz Luhrmann's movie, with all those quick cuts, doesn't work the same way onstage, so Logan had to reimagine the storytelling and the beats. Plus, he wrote a script that incorporates all the additional songs by Rihanna, Adele, Beyonce, etc., that weren't in the original 2001 movie. I'd argue Logan also gives Satine more agency in the musical, and makes the Duke a more dangerous rival for her affections, raising the stakes for Christian and everyone involved.
If I were a Tony voter, I'd have voted for Logan for Best Book, for all he accomplishes. He would've been a worthier winner than ''Jagged Little Pill.'' |
